Ed Harris felt “misled” about ‘Dutton Ranch’ role: “I’m feeling underused and inconsequential”

Dutton Ranch star Ed Harris has revealed he tried to get out of the show, after feeling disappointed with what he viewed as an “inconsequential” role. The show is both a spin-off and continuation of the Yellowstone franchise, following Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton (Cole Hauser and Kelly O’Reilly) as they start a new life on a ranch in South Texas. Harris, an Oscar nominee known for films such as The Truman Show, Apollo 13, and The Abyss, plays local veterinarian Everett McKinney in the series. Speaking to Variety in the video below, he revealed he is signed on for two seasons of the show, and that midway through filming the first he called his representatives to ask them to “get me the fuck out of here” due to dissatisfaction with his part. “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters,” Harris explained. “And that wasn’t really the case.” Ed Harris says he felt “misled” about his “inconsequential” role on “Dutton Ranch,” and that halfway through filming Season 1, he was telling his team to “get me the f— out of here.” “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what… pic.twitter.com/StmmazVogC — Variety (@Variety) July 21, 2026 He continued: “I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and [the showrunners] kind of went, ‘Oh.’ I’m being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in season two]. I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth.” He went on to say there was one particular cut scene that motivated him to leave. “So there’s this scene in there … I’m talking to [Beth Dutton] at the bar, and [Rip Wheeler] comes in and says, ‘OK, Everett, come on, it’s your turn,” Harris said. “I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out. I’m going, ‘Fuck you, people.’” Recommended He concluded that he has seen the show and thought it was “pretty good”, with his character feeling “relatively important to the story” even if it “didn’t feel that way” during filming. Dutton Ranch has been a success for streaming service Paramount+, and has been renewed for a second season following the first season’s conclusion on July 3. The news came after the show became the streamer’s biggest original series launch to date, with 12.9million global viewers in its first week.
