EastEnders solves major flashforward mystery after nine months

In today’s episode, Penny Branning gives birth to her baby and later reveals that the newborn is named Ethan, a name that is immediately familiar to fans who have been closely following the soap’s flashforward storyline. Baby Ethan appears in the January 1, 2027 flashforward episode, where Jack Branning is seen caring for the youngster. At the time of the flashforward, viewers have very little information about Ethan or why he is with Jack, leading to plenty of speculation over the baby’s identity and his connection to the Branning family. Now, the soap finally provides a major piece of the puzzle by confirming that Penny’s newborn is Ethan. Following the birth, Penny and Vinny Panesar are completely obsessed with their new arrival as they settle into life with the baby. However, there is little time for the exhausted new mum to rest when Suki Panesar arrives and announces that the baby’s naming ceremony is taking place that very day. The naming ceremony begins in accordance with Vinny’s Sikh faith, with Suki announcing that the baby’s name will begin with the letter E. Jack then suggests the name Ethan, and Penny and Vinny immediately love it, deciding it is the perfect name for their son. For viewers, however, the seemingly sweet family moment carries much greater significance. Ethan’s identity has been the subject of speculation ever since the flashforward, particularly because Jack is seen looking after the baby in the future. Max Branning also saves the baby’s life before the events shown in the flashforward, further deepening the mystery surrounding Ethan and the Branning family’s involvement in his future. However, Penny soon makes a discovery of her own as she figures out that Max is the father of Priya’s baby. With both women now holding potentially explosive information about each other, Penny and Priya agree to keep each other’s secrets. It means that although EastEnders finally reveals the identity of the mysterious baby Ethan after nine months of speculation, the circumstances surrounding his future with Jack remain far from clear.
