‘East of Eden’ trailer: Florence Pugh is formidable in Netflix’s enigmatic John Steinbeck adaptation

Based on John Steinbeck’s epic family saga, the seven-episode series is written by Zoe Kazan and also stars Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada, Joe Anders and Hoon Lee in pivotal roles.The trailer introduces key characters from the story with Florence embodying the villainous enigma of Cathy Ames, whose life gets intertwined with Adam and Charles from the Trask family as they come to live in California’s Salinas Valley. Cathy says at one point as romance brews between her and Adam, “Evil is not always apparent at first glance. It can come cloaked in goodness or beauty or love.” The trailer gives a glimpse into a host of other characters from the historical drama as tensions rise between the family and Cathy strikes with her force of evil.The book was previously made into the 1955 film adapted by Elia Kazan, the grand father of Zoe, who also serves as the co-showrunner on the Netflix series along with Jeb Stuart. Along with Pugh, the two have also executive produced the series while Garth Davis, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Antoine Douiahy and Zack Hayden serve as directors.East of Eden is set to be released on Netflix October 1.
