The royal author called on Spencer to be “more honest” about his reasons for writing the book, which he suggests is also about making money. You know, perhaps he does need the money, but he could be more honest about it. “But the other reason, of course, is just a sort of cold-hearted revenge. Obviously he and Charles have never got on. “We all know what he said in his eulogy at Westminster Abbey. Clearly he hasn’t softened his opinion over the years.” Earl Spencer says he was in Cape Town when Diana died aged 36 in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. He claims Charles was “giddily elated” when the pair spoke on the phone in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. And in an alleged row over William and Harry’s involvement in the funeral, he claims Charles told him Diana would be forgotten “soon enough”. The book prompted an “unprecedented” response from Buckingham Palace on Wednesday night. In further bombshell claims yesterday, the Earl writes that the late Queen reacted “tetchily” to the news of Diana’s Paris car crash. He alleges she asked, “what’s she been up to now?” before the accident’s seriousness became clear. And royal biographer Hugo Vickers says that the book is once again “stirring up division” for the family. Mr Vickers said: “[The book] can’t help either the king who’s not terribly well or Prince William or indeed Prince Harry. “I mean, at the end of the day, it’s going to be divisive and stir things up and inspire debates… We moved on, I would have hoped, from all this. “I mean, it was a very, very turbulent phase. I think it’s a pity all this comes up at this point to be divisive again. “He [Earl Spencer] is a very good writer. He knows how to write. He crafts things very well. “But inevitably, it seems to me that one of the effects of this book is to be extremely divisive.” In an interview with the BBC last night, Earl Spencer addressed the Palace response and suggested the King was “furious or embarrassed”. Defending himself, the Earl said: “I’ve only ever had two calls on the line with Prince Charles at any stage of my life. “I was hyper-alert to what he was saying, and those are precisely the words he said. I promise that to you now, genuinely, that is what he said.” Asked whether he has “evidence”, he added: “I told friends and family straight away about what had been said, because it was so monstrous.” A Royal spokesman said on Wednesday: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.” Comment now
