Sign in to your TheGamer account Since this week’s shocking news that BioWare was being shut down and that the next Mass Effect is cancelled, EA’s barren “Coming Soon” page is a little awkward. Earlier this week, we were all hit with the bombshell that, following the recent $55 billion buyout from Saudi Arabia’s investment fund, EA was cutting 400 jobs and shutting down Dragon Age and Mass Effect developer BioWare. It’s rough news in a rough time for the industry, and somehow got even worse. Barely 24 hours after the news of BioWare’s closure got out, someone from the studio leaked a trailer for the next Mass Effect, which would have been called Mass Effect: Universe. It reminded us all that the team had a massive project on its hands, which is even more noticeable with the current state of EA’s lineup. EA Has No Games On The Coming Soon Part Of Its Website That’s Not Quite Accurate, Though Over on Bluesky, startmenu editor-in-chief Lex Luddy highlighted a post from foxhack.bsky.social that points out the sad state of the “Coming Soon” section of EA’s official site. As of the time of writing, there are literally no games listed in that roundup, which is pretty noticeable considering this is EA we’re talking about. While you might think it’s just a clerical issue of some kind, the “Latest Games” list is completely up to date and has clearly been kept up with. Mass Effect’s cancellation is what brought this to everyone’s attention, but it’s not clear if the game was ever actually listed there in the first place since Wayback Machine doesn’t want to show any archived versions. I’m going to guess that it wasn’t there, seeing as how it didn’t have a confirmed final title before being cancelled. As damning as seeing the empty coming soon page is, it’s not entirely accurate. We already know that Star Wars Jedi 3 and Motive’s Iron Man are in development, and EA confirmed recently that a new Battlefield game is in the works alongside what’s believed to be a new Battlefront. There’s also a Sims project at some stage of development, alongside the next batch of annual sports titles. Even if EA does have a fair share of games in the works, the empty page is a painful reminder of how far out almost all of them are right now, and how long triple-A games now take to make. Mass Effect: Universe likely wouldn’t have changed that much, but it’s an extra painful bit of salt on an all-too-familiar wound.
