Dyson reveals first TOOTHBRUSH that ‘flosses for you while you brush’ & even rinses your mouth using ‘AI brain’

IMAGINE if you could brush and floss at the same time. Well, as it turns out, you can. Dyson might be best known for snazzy vacs and posh fans, but it’s now entered the toothbrush game. Yes, really. It means you can brush your teeth and enjoy some liquid flossing at the same time, all with a single device. Sign up for the Tech newsletter Thank you! “Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore,” Sir James Dyson explained. “Few of us do it even though we know we should. Dyson engineers and scientists have spent well over a decade understanding oral care regimes and how nasties build up in the mouth. “Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth. “We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque, how to improve cleaning performance while brushing.” Toothcare habits are poor, with Dyson highlighting how nine in 10 people don’t floss regularly enough, and spend just 45 seconds brushing on average – well below the recommended two minutes. And as many as 3.7 billion people have oral diseases globally, with growing recognition of links between other health conditions like heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Most read in Tech Normally good oral health means brushing, flossing, and mouth-washing – but getting everyone to do all three regularly is tricky. Dyson is attempting to solve that problem by fitting its toothbrush with a 100k-pixel macro lens camera. As you’re brushing, it scans 28 live images every second to “identify, track and predict gaps between teeth”. And within 100ms of the camera seeing a gap, the device will jet it with a conical burst of mouthwash to floss while you brush. Dyson trained its AI on more than 470,000 dental images, with the toothbrush running on over 16 million lines of code. Usually water-flossing devices use a kind of needle-shaped jet. But Dyson ran a load of tests and found that this type of jet would piece a hole through plaque but “fail to overcome its stickiness and remove it all”. The Dyson brush uses a conical jet with a broad spray that Dyson reckons “sweeps and removes plaque at once”. There’s a built-in 12.5ml mouthwash tank, which you’ll need to refill yourself. The brush itself uses a dual-bristle design with outer bristles to clean the gumline and inner bristles to remove surface stains. Dyson also uses something called “variable oscillation” to avoid having the bristles stall when jamming against the tooth. And it’s hardly a surprise that Dyson has also engineered its own toothpaste and mouthwash that go with the toothbrush. There’s a non-foaming toothpaste (so the camera can work properly), as well as a low-foaming mouth rinse. And they both come in Ginger Mint and Spearmint flavour options – with a sensitive Peppermint toothpaste also available. The other non-surprise is that Dyson’s toothbrush is internet-connected. It has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, so it can link up to your MyDyson app, where details about your fans and vacuum cleaners also live.
