Next year will mark the start of a new, possibly much bigger and better, era for Taylor Sheridan's Dutton Ranch. As one of the newest Yellowstone spinoff shows, Dutton Ranch has gotten off to a great start. It got great reviews, huge audience numbers, and it's already confirmed for a second season. While it doesn't have an official release date yet, Dutton Ranch season 2 is set to begin filming in 2027, and it could be released later that same year. Despite all the success it has enjoyed so far, Dutton Ranch still hasn't managed to usurp Yellowstone. It can't boast the same popularity and cultural ubiquity as the original, and it certainly isn't one of the best Western shows ever made yet. Taylor Sheridan, for his part, seems to be actively trying to change that. With any luck, Sheridan could ensure that Dutton Ranch becomes the new Yellowstone in season 2. Dutton Ranch Season 2 Is Bringing Many Changes Image via MovieStillsDB The main reason Dutton Ranch is entering a new era in season 2 is because the show is drastically changing behind the scenes. Arguably the biggest change is the fact that Dutton Ranch has a new showrunner, as Chad Feehan is being replaced by Benjamin Cavell. Cavell is known for writing both Justified and SEAL Team, two big hits in years past. He should bring a new creative voice to Dutton Ranch, and he could take the show in a very different direction. In another major change, joining Cavell is Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan worked exclusively as a "hands-off" executive producer in Dutton Ranch season 1, but he's reportedly set to join the second season's writing room and have a more direct impact on the show. Sheridan and Cavell could significantly change the overall tone and creative direction Dutton Ranch season 2 takes. For example, Dutton Ranch season 1 depicted both Beth and Rip in a somewhat odd way. The pair was a lot calmer than they were in Yellowstone, a decision many viewers didn't appreciate. Their personalities felt watered down, which was fairly significant given fans fell in love with Beth and Rip for their fiery personalities, short tempers, and foul mouths. Sheridan and Cavell may decide to bring Dutton Ranch's characterization of Beth and Rip more in line with their depiction in Yellowstone. On top of it all, Dutton Ranch is also reportedly getting a new main character. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser teased that Ed Harris, who plays Everett McKinney, is taking on a much bigger role in season 2. Beth and Rip will surely still be there, but Everett will get a lot more focus, and Dutton Ranch will have to expand its scope to include multiple protagonists. In short, Dutton Ranch season 2 will feel very different from season 1. Dutton Ranch Season 2 Could Be Significantly Better Than Season 1 Image via MovieStillsDB There's also a chance that this new era of Dutton Ranch ends up making season 2 even better than season 1. Dutton Ranch season 1 was great; the show got rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, it broke viewership records for Paramount+, and it easily secured a renewal. Saying that Dutton Ranch season 2 will be better isn't an indictment of season 1, it's very high praise for the upcoming installment. It can figure out how to handle Beth and Rip's characterization in a way more faithful to Yellowstone, it can work out how to expand the series' scope to focus on side characters like Everett, and it can benefit from Taylor Sheridan's incredible writing more directly. Dutton Ranch season 2 has a lot of advantages that season 1 didn't. With all these changes, there's even a chance that Dutton Ranch season 2 could become the proper replacement for Yellowstone. The other sequel series, Marshals, has already turned some viewers off thanks to its episodic format and some pacing issues. Dutton Ranch already feels similar to Yellowstone, but these changes can make it feel like a true sequel. While it won't have Kevin Costner or be set in Montana, Dutton Ranch could pick up right where Yellowstone left off and, hopefully, enjoy the same massive popularity.
