Dungeons & Dragons Is Getting Its First M-Rated Setting Next Year

While a few secrets are still being kept under wraps, D&D's presence at GenCon this weekend is kicking off with some major announcements. And ahead of the event, ScreenRant sat down for a press briefing on the new releases, which includes the tabletop RPG's first M-rated setting ever. As part of these releases, we got a glimpse at D&D's 2027 Roadmap, which will see the return of classic settings like Dark Sun and Greyhawk. The former will release in early 2027, and it's billed as Dungeons & Dragons' first-ever M-rated setting. The books will even come with a content warning sticker that lists violence, nudity, and sexuality among the reasons for the rating. For those familiar with Dark Sun already, it might not be that surprising to see that it's becoming the first M-rated setting for D&D. With its post-apocalyptic setting, brutality, and the unforgiving world of Athas, Dark Sun is about as close to a Mature game the TTRPG franchise has ever had. And it seems like D&D is going all-in by amping up the violence that already helped set Dark Sun apart from most oether Dungeons & Dragons settings. The new Dark Sun releases are made up of multiple books, and they'll all arrive as part of D&D's "Season of Survival" in 2027. From character creation to DM guidance, expect to see new monsters, classes, species, and a lot more when the Dark Sun books finally drop next year. The new releases for Dark Sun include the gameplay expansion, Blood and Power, as well as the Edge of Oblivion setting expansion. These will launch during the Season of Survival, which makes up the first few months of 2027, followed by Season of Sword & Sorcery, which will bring back Greyhawk in an equally major way. Rounding out the year will be Season of Rebellion, but those releases are being kept under wraps for now. With 5e and the 5.5 revamp in 2024, Dungeons & Dragons has continued going back to its past settings, and that doesn't seem to be changing much in the future. The original Dark Sun was one of the most popular settings of the '90s, so it's nice to see its return. Making it a full-fledged release of books, along with its M-rating, is all the more promising.
