Published Jul 30, 2026, 7:01 PM EDT During this year's Dungeons & Dragons Vision Keynote, Wizards of the Coast announced that its classic post-apocalyptic setting, Dark Sun, would return in 2027. The announcement was made via a delightfully brutal cinematic trailer, complete with dismemberment, decapitation and murder, all set over a scintillating synth backing track that's wholly appropriate for the return of a '90s classic. Dark Sun Rising Dark Sun's comeback will begin in February 2027, during Dungeons & Dragons' Season of Survival. The revamped Dark Sun setting will receive three new books, as well as a Dark Sun-themed variant of the Player's Handbook. These include a gameplay expansion, Blood & Power, and a setting expansion, Edge of Oblivion. Unlike the upcoming Arcana Unleashed lineup, Dark Sun won't be receiving an adventure expansion (campaign). Instead, the aforementioned books will give players the tools to create and run their own campaigns. Interestingly, Dark Sun's two expansion books are the first mature-rated products ever released under the Dungeons & Dragons brand, and are shrink-wrapped with a warning label to comply with regulations. Included in the gameplay expansion will be a brand-new class, the Psion. A Dark Sun Map Pack is also on the way for parties that want more visual aids for their campaigns. In a media pre-briefing attended by TheGamer, Dungeons & Dragons executive producer Greg Bilsland revealed the city-states at the core of the revamped Dark Sun setting — each is intended to represent a "different flavour of post-apocalyptic storytelling." Tyr: "The flicker of freedom in this dying world. Its sorcerer king Kalak lies dead, but the city's revolution continues; Tyr's flames forge a future in iron and burn those suspected of sympathising with tyrants." Draj: "In Draj, we have a city-state that forsakes the way of the rest of Athas, for the glory of Athas' two moons. Life, gravity and reality bend to those willing to sacrifice for their lunar god-king, the Lifebringer." Gulg: "In Gulg, life and death harmonise under the sorcerer king Lalai-Puy. The city's three towers incorpse plant guardians that subsist on spirits, its citizens destined for metaphysical composting. Urik: "A brutalist engine of war driven to conquer by its sorcerer king Hamanu. As the world burns, Urik marches to take control of the ashes." Raam: "Every day is the last day. Here, consequences and taboos like bleeding and any debauchery can be had for the price of coin, novelty and flesh." Nibenay: "The scholars of Nibenay lay claim to a city of a forgotten past. They join their minds with their sorcerer king in pursuit of alien glories and ways to outwit their own extinction. " Balic: "Balic comes from a sorcerer king's reckless pursuit of power, a wasteland dominated by bizarre and deadly remnants of mad ambition." Each of these city-states returns from the original run of Dark Sun, albeit with some changes (or perhaps the advancement of time), as Kalak now lies dead in Tyr. The return of Dark Sun is sure to excite many, especially those who have been clamouring for a more mature story from Wizards of the Coast.
