Dunelm launches mushroom lamp alternative to John Lewis version – and it’s £55 cheaper

Both run on rechargeable batteries rather than a plug, which is a huge plus when styling a room. So you can put it on a bookshelf, a bedside table, or a windowsill without needing to be placed near a socket. The two lamps aren’t identical though, and it’s worth knowing where they part company before you buy. John Lewis specifies steel and 129 lumens, while Dunelm describes it as durable metal and lists 100 lumens, so the pricier lamp is slightly brighter. Both give off the same warm 3000K glow, both are 20cm across, and both carry a two-year guarantee. Most read in Shopping Dunelm’s is actually the taller of the two at 29.2cm, compared with 25.5cm, so it’s worth checking if you’re slotting it under a shelf. John Lewis quotes up to eight hours on a full charge, while Dunelm doesn’t publish a runtime figure at all – one reviewer puts it at six to eight hours, though. One buyer calls it “a great little lamp when a socket is too far away” and adds that a charger is included. Another describes it as “great quality for the price”. For comparison, the John Lewis lamp has around 250 reviews and an average of 4.3 out of five. The lamp is rated for indoor use only, so it isn’t one for the patio. If it’s the outdoor space you’re still sorting, Dunelm’s sun lounger in four colours is the more sensible spend, and there’s a four-seater patio set going cheap elsewhere.
