German security services are investigating a series of suspicious drone flights over a highly secure military base in North Rhine-Westphalia. The base also serves as Europe’s only “Patriot shipyard,” a specialized facility where military technicians maintain and repair the US-made Patriot air defense systems currently in high demand in Ukraine. Overnight surveillance operation According to reports from German broadcasters WDR and NDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, security personnel guarding the Mechernich base recorded six separate drone flights over the facility between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 7. Local police from the Euskirchen district were called to the scene and personally witnessed at least one of the drones, noting that it briefly circled directly over the emergency responders. German military police also observed the flights. According to a confidential police report, military investigators suspect the unmanned aerial vehicles were Chinese-made Foxtech Fly-380 VTOL models. A hybrid threat in Europe The surveillance flights in Mechernich occurred just two days after a security breach at Germany’s Leipzig-Halle airport, a critical logistics hub for the German armed forces, NATO allies, and Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines. On August 5, flights were diverted after German police discovered a drone rigged with an explosive attachment on the tarmac near a Ukrainian cargo plane. A police bomb-disposal robot was deployed to neutralize the device. Simultaneously, a DHL cargo plane aborted its landing and collided with a second unidentified flying object mid-air, sustaining minor damage. Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, directly blamed Moscow for the Leipzig incident, stating on Welt TV: “Who else could it be but Russia?” US and European intelligence agencies increasingly view these incidents not as isolated events, but as part of a broader, Moscow-directed campaign of hybrid warfare and sabotage designed to probe NATO’s resolve and defenses. Western leaders have noted a growing pattern of Russian reconnaissance and harassment operations across the continent. Suspicious drones have been spotted at least 144 times across 13 European countries between Aug. 2024 and Feb. 2026.
