Drone Debris, Live Warheads Discovered in Romania and Black Sea

Romanian military disposal teams neutralized debris from multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – including fragments containing live explosive warheads – discovered across coastal regions, the Black Sea, and the border county of Tulcea on Friday, Sept. 11. In one instance, naval specialists discovered an unexploded warhead among the maritime debris and conducted a controlled detonation to neutralize the hazard safely. A separate fragment in coastal waters had been spotted by the crew of a commercial vessel, who alerted the Romanian Border Police. A subsequent inspection confirmed that the object contained no explosives. Later Friday evening, at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time, military explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams were deployed to a coastal area north of the port city of Constanța. Specialists determined that the site contained remnants of four UAVs, including an interceptor drone with an unexploded charge. The munition was neutralized without incident. The Ministry of National Defence did not publicly identify the specific drone models or confirm their national origin. Romania’s Black Sea coastline and Danube River border areas have repeatedly experienced airspace violations and falling debris amid Russian aerial campaigns targeting Ukrainian port and logistics infrastructure in the adjacent Odesa region. Regional airspace incursions The discoveries follow recurring border incursions involving unmanned aircraft across southeastern Europe. On Aug. 24, an unauthorized drone transited Moldovan airspace before crossing into Romania during an overnight Russian aerial assault on Ukrainian cities. According to Moldova’s Defense Ministry, the drone crossed into Moldova near Vynohradivka in Ukraine’s Odesa region before exiting near Pașcani in Cahul District toward Romania’s Galați County. Romania’s Defense Ministry reported that military radar systems tracked intermittent signals near Cahul before detecting an aerial contact over the Târgu Bujor area in Galați County. In response, the Romanian Air Force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter, while the Department for Emergency Situations issued automated RO-Alert warnings to residents in the border area. The incursion was the second such airspace breach recorded over Moldova and Romania within a three-day span in late August.
