(Screenshot BILD TV)Following reports on Monday of an aerial drone having crashed near Lake Steinhude, around one kilometer from the Budeswehr’s strategic military airbase of Wunstorf in Germany’s Lower Saxony, the German authorities have deployed a large-scale police search operation to recover all debris.The airbase is home to Germany’s strategic air transport fleet of around 40 Airbus A400M cargo, and a key player in national and NATO strategic airlift capabilities.A police spokesperson, quoted by regional broadcaster NDR, said there is no immediate ongoing danger to the public. However, the proximity of the crash location to the base in the context of recent suspected acts of sabotage suggests the authorities are leaving nothing to chance.The spokesperson said that further information would only be released once all components have been retrieved and fully examined to determine whether the drone carried any surveillance equipment, explosives, or was simply an amateur’s a commercial drone.Espionage or sabotage?German security services have been placed on high alert given that the crash follows a series of suspected state-sponsored hybrid attacks across Germany in 2026. The German government publicly blamed Russia for that operation, resulting in diplomatic sanctions and the closure of a Russian consulate.This was the culmination of a broad pattern of sabotage. German authorities say they have recorded more than 160 acts of sabotage and over 1,000 suspicious drone sightings over critical military and civilian infrastructure so far this year, which intelligence and top officials believe are part of a coordinated campaign of hybrid warfare linked to Russian state entities.It is currently unknown who launched the drone or whether its presence near the airfield was intentional.
