Drone attack targets Iranian Kurdish base in northern Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – A drone attack carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted on Saturday evening a base belonging to an Iranian Kurdish opposition group in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. According to reports, the strike hit the headquarters and a guard post of the Komala party. The base is located in the Alana Valley within the Balisan region, northeast of Erbil. Local security and party officials confirmed the strike caused material damage to buildings but resulted in no casualties. This attack is a part of Tehran’s intensified campaign against Iraqi-based Iranian Kurdish opposition groups. Since the military conflict broke out in the region on February 28, Iran has launched over 1,000 drones and missiles into Iraqi Kurdistan, claiming that these groups are directly endangering its national security and have Israeli support. In mid-August, two explosive-laden drones launched from Iranian territory targeted Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s private office and the home of a top intelligence official. The strikes took place in Erbil province’s Pirmam area, which is around 30 kilometers north of the capital. Security personnel recognized the drone as an Iranian-designed “Hadid-110” kamikaze drone carrying explosive payloads. While Tehran and Iran-backed armed groups have previously accused Iraqi Kurdistan of hosting hostile Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, the authorities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq have always denied using their territory to threaten neighboring nations.
