According to garden expert Allyn Hane, who runs the YouTube channel ‘the Lawn Care Nut’, mixing washing up liquid with water can actually help solve the problem of patchy grass. He said that the liquid acts as a “wetting agent”, which breaks the surface tension of the water and makes it “slippier”. This allows it to penetrate the grass much deeper and faster, meaning you can rehydrate your lawn – without using litres of water. Using standard washing up soap, he advises mixing 140 millilitres for every 1,000 sq ft of garden. He also suggests to treat “problem spots” with the liquid soap before wetting it.
