Drawing competition held to mark International Vulture Awareness Day

Students with their works done as part of International Vulture Awareness Day drawing competition in Masinagudi. A drawing competition to mark International Vulture Awareness Day was organised for schoolchildren at the Government Higher Secondary School in Masinagudi on Thursday. A total of 55 students participated in the event.The competition, conducted by the Eco-Voice Trust, focused on spreading awareness among the students on vultures and environmental conservation. Students were given natural dyes, instead of chemical-based ones, to make their drawings. The natural colours were made using millets, turmeric, coffee, tea, mud and charcoal. “The programme was conducted in collaboration with Canara Bank, Yellanalli Branch, The Nilgiris, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness among schoolchildren through creative and sustainable activities. The Nilgiris is an important stronghold for the white-rumped vulture and Indian vulture, representing a significant southern population of these critically important scavenger species,” the Eco-Voice Trust said in a press release.Speaking at the event, Manigandan S., founder of Eco Voice Trust, highlighted the importance of protecting these vulture populations and their habitats. “Vultures play an important role in maintaining the health of the ecosystem by naturally disposing of animal carcasses. Protecting the vulture population in the Nilgiris is therefore very important for both biodiversity and ecosystem health,” he said.At the end of the competition, certificates were presented to the participants.
