Whether you’re a casual PC gamer who only uses Steam from time to time or a hardcore player who has been shouting about the master race since the beginning, chances are you know and hate Denuvo DRM. The infamous anti-tamper software has become a regular annoyance for triple-A games, and something that everyone hates to see. The main purpose of Denuvo is to prevent games from being pirated, but, more annoyingly, it has been proven to impact the performance of most games that utilise it. That makes it a big disappointment whenever it’s spotted in a game, and a big relief if it ever gets removed. Well, thankfully, this is yet another time to celebrate. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Has Officially Ditched Denuvo Another One Bites The Dust As pointed out by Redditor Fun-Possibility1462 on the CrackWatch subreddit, a random update for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined that went live yesterday has suddenly removed Denuvo DRM from the game. SteamDB’s update log shows this, with a massive drop in data that’s found whenever the anti-tamper software is removed from a game. The removal of Denuvo DRM is also confirmed by Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined’s Steam page no longer having the infamous yellow box saying "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-Tamper". I haven’t found any deep dives into how and if Denuvo impacted Reimagined’s performance, but at least that’s no longer a potential issue for PC players. It’s not entirely clear why Square Enix has decided to stop forcing Denuvo on Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined’s PC players, but it’s likely the same story for similar cases. Even with Denuvo, Reimagined was very quickly cracked after release, so Square likely thought it was pointless continuing to pay for the software so long after launch. It being nearly six months after Reimagined first launched also suggests Square might have planned its removal in advance, giving the game enough time with the software to deter pirates near launch. Square has also removed Denuvo from multiple games after they’ve launched, so it’s not exactly a new practice for it.
