Dozens of students trapped inside five-storey hostel after building collapsed with 4 found dead and 8 seriously injured

AT LEAST four people have been killed and several more injured after a five-storey building collapsed, sparking an urgent rescue operation. More than 50 people are feared to be trapped under the rubble of the student hostel which crashed down in Delhi, India. A dozen fire engines have also been dispatched as bystanders desperately try to clear the debris for rescue teams to come through. Eyewitnesses claim the horror unfolded after a neighbouring building crashed into the hostel which was accomodation for university students. Rooms had been packed with young people because there were no classes on a Sunday. It is unclear excatly how many people were inside the building when it came crashing down. But one local resident told the Times of India that the hostel had around 15 rooms with two to three students per room. Chief Minister of Delhi Rekha Gupta has visisted the site of the horror – and vowed that “no one will be spared”,” she says.” in the rescue efforts. The building next to the hotel had been evacuated “as a precautionary measure”. Construction work was being carried out on the basement of the “Hotel Haze” hostel – with builders among those buried under the rubble. A local shopowner said: “They strengthened the upper building, but the pillars below were weak.” Police have launched a probe and are searching for the owner of the building. Prime Minister has also expressed his condolences for the “distressing” incident. In a post on X, he said: “Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.” But outraged commenteres wondered: “Who is responsible for this tragedy?” The National Union of Students has demanded a thorough investigation into the devastating collapse.
