Donald Trump calls Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang live on stage, says AI takeover claims are a hoax

While AI leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei are worried about AI safety, Trump believes that AI is not a risk to humanity. The US president even interrupted Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during an event recently to make his point clear.During the All-In Summit in Los Angeles on Monday, Jensen Huang received a phone call from the US president while he was on-stage for a live panel. Huang answered the call on stage and put Trump on speakerphone, allowing Trump to address the audience directly.As he took the call, Huang said, “Mr President? I’ve got to tell you something. If it wasn’t because of you calling, I would... I’m on stage with the besties.” Trump replied with a lighthearted joke at the Nvidia CEO. “You see, the great thing about life is that Jensen can develop the most complex computer chip in the world that nobody can copy for 10 years, but he can’t figure out how to put me on speaker,” he said.Donald Trump then turned to the debate over AI, claiming that only China would be happy to see US companies slow down development. “So, the AI, it’s almost a conspiracy, and the happiest group is China, they’re very happy,” he said. “I’m telling you, it’s all a hoax." Donald Trump calls data centres the oil of the futureTrump tried to emphasise the importance of advanced AI models in the future, claiming that AI data centres may be as important as oil in the next few years. “The data centres are great, and they make people wealthy, and they make states wealthy, and it’s the oil of the next 20, 25 years,” Donald Trump added. “It’s bigger than the Internet... whoever wins AI wins."At the same time, the US president addressed fears around AI safety and whether humanity was truly at risk. “The robots are not going to be taking over the world and that’s not going to happen. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world. The whole thing is a hoax,” he explained. Trump said the AI industry should still proceed carefully, but should not be held back. “Now, with that, we have to be a little bit careful, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop an industry," he said. The US president argued that opponents of data centre construction were “playing right into the hands of a lot of people that don’t want to see it happen,” potentially China. “We’re not going to let that happen,” Trump said.“You’re right. We’re not going to let that happen, sir,” Jensen Huang replied. “We’re going to make sure that everybody wins in the AI race in America. Every industry, every company, every state, every people.” Nvidia is one of the most important companies in the AI ecosystem as it manufactures highly advanced GPUs that power AI data centres.The debate around the future of AI has only grown in recent days after former Anthropic staff member Jacob Coxon claimed that companies like OpenAI and Anthropic were “gambling with our lives.” Anthropic’s safety lead Evan Hubinger has also claimed that there’s a 10 per cent chance AI may end humanity within the next decade. Following such comments, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote a long essay where he suggested regulation around AI development.Amodei’s stance drew support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and tech billionaire Elon Musk. Though Amodei has argued that any slowdown would be harder to achieve if China and other countries continued advancing without similar constraints.This is not the first time Donald Trump has addressed the ongoing discussions about AI safety. Previously, Trump accused Amodei of “pretending to be a perfect little angel” with his suggestions on slowing AI development. So far, Donald Trump has rejected the idea of regulating advanced models by US companies. Though he reportedly met OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently to discuss AI safety.
