Domicile Desktop Brings Web Technologies To Building Wayland Desktops

Domicile is a new Wayland compositor that leverages Chromium for allowing custom Linux desktops to be built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript. It's a novel approach for those web developers wanting to extensively customize their Linux desktop experience using web technologies. The modified Chromium engine allows for representing native Wayland windows as DOM elements, from there allowing developers to style / transform / animate and organize windows as they would of typical HTML web pages with CSS. On the Wayland compositor side, the Sway-inspired and RUst-based Maganese tiling code is leveraged. The wild times we live in with Domicile. While there will certainly be mixed opinions on whether web technologies along in the desktop/compositor for window management and transformations, it's an interesting technical and novel approach to make desktop window customizations more approachable.
