HARROWING emergency audio has revealed firefighters scrambling to tackle a raging blaze after an Amazon cargo plane crashed off a runway in Miami, leaving five people dead. The dramatic dispatches reveal the chaos facing emergency crews after Flight 7598 overshot a runway at Miami International Airport at around 2pm on Sunday. Firefighters raced to get hoses close enough to the aircraft to douse the heavy flames and smoke pouring from the wreckage. Read more on plane crashes But the operation was made even more dangerous because the plane’s left engine was reportedly still running. The live engine prevented firefighters from safely entering the aircraft to search for anyone trapped inside. Radio traffic reportedly captured crews saying the pilots had told them they could not shut it down because they would need to “energize” the aircraft. Firefighters were then forced to flood the engine with water in an attempt to disable it. Most read in The Sun At the same time, other rescuers were battling to free seriously injured people from vehicles struck by the cargo jet. One victim was trapped underneath a vehicle and had to be freed by specialist rescue crews. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Raied “Ray” Jadallah described the operation as a “very complex situation,” with crews also battling an active fuel leak. Around 200 firefighters and 60 units were involved in the mammoth emergency response, with crews arriving within just 30 seconds of receiving the call. Another five were rushed to hospital, including three who remained in critical condition. Officials have not yet publicly identified those killed or injured. The pilot and co-pilot were also trapped inside the plane following the crash, Jadallah said, although it remains unclear how long they were stuck or the extent of any injuries they suffered. Flight 7598, operated by cargo carrier 21 Air, had flown from San Juan, Puerto Rico, before landing at Miami International Airport. The Boeing 767-300 overran the runway before smashing through the airport perimeter and striking multiple vehicles. Pictures from the aftermath showed mangled cars caught among chunks of fencing as the aircraft came to rest near a parking lot. Student pilot Rohan Ellis, 34, who was on the other side of the airport at the time, described the vehicles as “mangled.” Flight-tracking data reportedly showed the jet leaving the usable runway at around 129mph amid thunderstorms and gusty conditions. It is not yet known what caused the plane to overrun the runway. The crash brought operations at one of America’s busiest airports to a standstill for hours after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy ordered a full ground stop. Hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled before two of MIA’s four runways reopened later on Sunday. Amazon said it was “heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport.” “Our deepest condolences go out to the families, loved ones and all those affected by this devastating loss. “We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to learn more and will cooperate fully with any investigation.” 21 Air CEO Keith Winters said the company was “devastated” and cooperating with federal investigators. “Our deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” he said. “Our immediate priorities are supporting those affected, assisting the authorities and ensuring that accurate information is communicated as it becomes available.” Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are now probing the disaster.
