‘Distressed’ autistic man, 28, died after being handcuffed by cops ‘for his own safety’ as watchdog launches probe

AN AUTISTIC man tragically died after being handcuffed by cops “for his own safety”, sparking an investigation by the police watchdog. They informed the police that he was in “significant distress” and that he had autism. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Cops attended a property on Duchy Road, Salford following reports that Ricky “had been violent and that the family needed assistance to restrain him”. After “attempting to de-escalate the situation”, officers decided to restrain Ricky with handcuffs at around 7.50pm. Ricky was “presenting as in crisis on the floor, and appeared to be in distress, agitated and a potential risk to himself,” according to police. Bodycam footage shows officers telling Ricky that this was being done for his own safety. Ricky then became unresponsive and at 8pm the officers started performing CPR as paramedics arrived at the scene. Ricky was then taken to hospital where he sadly died the next day. Due to the police’s contact with Ricky prior to his death, GMP has referred itself to the IOPC. Ricky’s devastated family have started a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of his funeral. The page reads: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ricky. “His kindness, love, and generosity touched so many lives, and his loss has left an immeasurable void in our hearts. “We have created this GoFundMe to help cover the costs of giving Ricky the dignified and peaceful farewell he deserves. “During this incredibly difficult time, any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease the financial burden on our family. “Thank you for your love, support, and kindness as we honour the memory of someone who meant so much to all who knew him.” Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker said: “This is a really distressing time for all concerned – particularly the family of the man who has sadly passed away after this incident. “We are doing what we can to establish what happened to answer any questions they will have. “Our officers attended to try to help what was a complex and challenging circumstance. “We are ensuring they are getting the support they need at this time. “It is vital that a proper investigation, independent of the police, is able to be carried out. “We are fully assisting with the IOPC’s enquiries and are committed to accountability to help ensure the facts are established.”
