Disney’s Percy Jackson Season 3 Officially Confirms Rick Riordan's Book Change With A Character Upgrade

The stars of Percy Jackson and the Olympians talk some more exciting changes from the books that fans will see in the third season. Percy Jackson season 3 will hit Disney+ later this year, with this installment's plot being adapted from The Titan's Curse, the third book in Rick Riordan's flagship fantasy series. Following Percy Jackson season 2's ending, Percy (Walker Scobell) and co. find two new young demigods, siblings Nico (Levi Chrisopulos) and Bianca di Angelo (Olive Abercrombie). Bianca has a sizable role in the book, while Nico is actually off-page for most of it, as he is left behind at Camp Half-Blood when the main characters embark on a new quest (Nico does become more central in later books). However, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Scobell and Chrisopulos share that Nico will have a larger role in season 3. "He's a bigger part of the entire season," says Scobell. "Because it's not from Percy's point of view. There are a couple times where we get to see what's going on at camp, and how Nico's doing, and how some of the other campers are doing. So you get to see a little more of Nico scattered throughout the season." 14-year-old Chrisopulos worked with acting coach Andrew Mcllory to maintain "the solid points of Nico's personality from the book," while changing "a few things to match with the other character changes in the show from Percy and Thalia [Tamara Smart] and Bianca." Additionally, Chrisopulos tracked Nico's arc throughout the season by journaling every day, stating: "So, every night, I would journal as Nico of the thing or the set that we filmed on that day. I would journal in Nico's head, like fan fiction almost. It was really helpful, but also just a fun thing that I could do. It was really, really fun to tap into that." Furthermore, Scobell and Chrisopulos talked about how Percy and Nico's initial relationship would be different in the TV show. In The Titan's Curse, Percy is definitely irritated by Nico's overeager personality and conflation of his fantasy interests and the reality of the demigods' world, but Percy nonetheless feels responsible for Nico, promising to protect his older sister when Percy joins her quest, but not Nico. Nico reminds Percy a lot more of himself and how happy you could be in this [magical world]. I think it's really easy to start to lose your optimism [when] you start to feel really negative feelings, and I feel like Nico is so positive, and he's so happy, and everything is so interesting and cool to him, and I feel Percy likes seeing that a lot. Last year's season finale saw some major, shocking changes to the source material; this may seem more moderate in comparison, but it is also done to serve Riordan and the TV team's new vision for the adaptation. Percy Jackson's universe is very big at this point, with several spinoff book series, and it remains to be seen how these changes will affect the TV universe in the long run. Percy Jackson's returning cast includes Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, and Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan, while newcomers for the third season include Dafne Keen as Artemis, Kate McKinnon as Aphrodite, Saara Chaudry as Zoë Nightshade, and Holt McCallany as Atlas. Meanwhile, Disney+ recently confirmed that an adaptation of The Kane Chronicles, Riordan's book series set in the same world as Percy Jackson but rooted in Egyptian mythology, is in development. As the Percy Jackson TV series maintains an overall Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% and has repeatedly been a streaming hit, it is safe to expect changes made this season and future ones to be successful.
