Led by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, The Americans helped push prestige television forward when it premiered in January 2013. The story of Russian spies posing as an ordinary American married couple garnered waves of acclaim and has been a rewatchable favorite since it concluded eight years ago. That rewatchability of the Cold War saga has lent itself to a high-profile remake titled The Koreans, described as a reimagining of the FX drama. The project was formally announced in March, but it's been fast-moving, and a release window is already on the horizon. An article in Variety previewing the K-drama Made in Korea reveals that The Koreans is eyeing a 2027 debut on Disney+ and Hulu. As of now, however, Disney+ has not announced a release date or even a release window one way or another. Park Eun-gyo is one of the key writers on Made in Korea, which debuts September 9 on Disney+ and Hulu. She will also adapt The Koreans, which is a positive since both dramas share spy elements. In The Koreans, however, the story takes place in the early 1990s and has already tapped Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min of Heavenly Ever After and Behind Your Touch to be the main stars. More specifically, The Koreans unfolds during the time of democratization and cultural modernization. The South Korean setting in the early 1990s puts its focus on a middle-class family that is actually hiding a secret that amounts to treason. Although they seem like regular citizens to just about everyone, including friends and neighbors and even their own family, the parents are top-level North Korean spies aiming to destroy the South as part of their inside job. Just as The Americans did by introducing Margo Martindale and Julia Garner for game-changing guest turns, The Koreans will shine a spotlight on the spies as they deal with their conflicting feelings. Those revolve around patriotism, loyalty, identity, and love. And like its FX counterpart, as well, there's more than the personal angst at stake. That's because the adaptation will also feature a Korean counterintelligence agent who is hell-bent on revealing the couple's true identity.
