It is no secret that Game of Thrones is severely and rather criminally lacking in the video game department. Despite its rich worldbuilding, cast of memorable and nuanced characters, and low-fantasy setting being perfectly suited for the video game treatment, no one has been able to find a way to adapt it, offering only a handful of disappointing mobile games, a somewhat competent Telltale game, and a lackluster Xbox 360 RPG that no one remembers. However, at least it has gotten some games, and there are even new Game of Thrones video games on the horizon. The Discworld series, which is equally deserving of and suited to the video game adaptation, hasn't had a new game in over two decades. Fortunately, there are talented developers out there with a love of both of these incredible IPs that are offering experiences akin to them. One game in particular, a new massive open-world RPG, is set to deliver a fantasy epic that blends the best parts of both that fans will absolutely want to check out. Open-World RPG Feels Like Game Of Thrones Meets Discworld If there were one genre that Game of Thrones, and Discworld for that matter, would be best suited for, it would be an open-world RPG. Both series feature expansive, highly detailed, and complex worlds filled with compelling locations, factions, complex political and social issues, and a touch of grit that helps ground it all in a believable way. Sadly, the vast majority of games like Game of Thrones tend to veer more toward being linear experiences or lack as nuanced an open-world as it so rightfully deserves. Fortunately, this is where the upcoming open-world fantasy RPG, Fable, comes in. The series, which, in many ways, feels like a spiritual successor to Discworld, has always offered immersive and believable landscapes packed with iconic locations, great characters, and rewarding secrets. However, the latest game in the series is set to expand upon everything its predecessors implemented, with even more robust life-sim elements, a greater sense of scope and scale, and far more activities and secrets to uncover off the beaten path. For Discworld fans, this is phenomenal, as they'll get the extremely British, fantastical, fairytale-esque open-world they've always dreamed of. It is also fantastic for Game of Thrones fans, as they are getting a massive new fantasy world to immerse themselves within, one filled with morally ambiguous characters, meaningful consequences, political intrigue across a kingdom in strife, and a plethora of British accents that will almost certainly befuddle and confound American players. Fable Could Be The Next Great Fantasy RPG It isn't just the similarities between it, Discworld, and Game of Thrones that will likely make Fable the next great fantasy RPG. Rather, its ridiculous ambitions to deliver a world that feels alive in a way no other video game fantasy world ever has is immensely appealing and potentially genre-defining. Fable's expansive open-world isn't merely home to NPCs with schedules, or one that gives the illusion of meaningful activity like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim. Everyone you meet and interact with has their own personality, their own purpose, and can be influenced greatly by your actions. From the gameplay we've seen, Fable looks set to offer a dynamic world with consequences that actually affect your playthrough in a way that no one else will likely ever experience. The way one can mess with, romance, fight, or simply converse with the 1,000 NPCs populating the game is truly astounding, and should developer Playground Games manage to pull it all off in a way that actually feels good to play rather than merely hear about, then Fable could truly become the best open-world RPG ever made, or at least the most immersive. It is for this reason that I'm rather glad Fable was delayed so significantly, as being buried between releases like GTA 6 and Marvel's Wolverine would have likely led to it losing the spotlight it so readily deserves. Fable will absolutely cater to those who want a game that faithfully adopts the best elements of both Game of Thrones and Discworld, but it also looks set to be so much more, and, for that reason, it feels like a very easy game to recommend to fans of both of the aforementioned series to keep a close eye on it.
