It seems we're always "fixing" our Wi-Fi connections without ever getting there. Wireless networks have to deal with interference, latency, congestion, jitter, and a host of other things, and this keeps users on their toes. On one of these Wi-Fi fixing adventures, you may have come across "OFDMA" in your router's settings, and disabling it may even have improved your connection for a while. OFDMA is a Wi-Fi 6 feature that is intended to keep your Wi-Fi snappy even when multiple devices are vying for high-speed links to the router. You should leave it enabled in most situations to ensure your latency-sensitive devices aren't waiting around. OFDMA is a core Wi-Fi 6 feature designed to minimize latency There's a reason it's enabled Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access, or OFDMA, is an improvement over Wi-Fi 5's OFDM. The latter allowed only a single device to use a particular wireless channel at a time, with every other device waiting for their turn. This arrangement works fine when you only have a handful of devices, but falls apart in the presence of an extensive home network. OFDMA allows your router to divide a wireless channel into smaller resource units (RUs), which it can assign to multiple devices. This enables more than one device to access the same transmission window simultaneously instead of waiting in a single file. So, your smartphone browsing Instagram, laptop running a video call, and a smart bulb sending a status ping can transmit at the same time. On the uplink side, OFDMA allows your devices to send synchronized data packets to the router in a single window. This makes OFDMA one of the core Wi-Fi 6 features that prevents your home network from feeling sluggish. Diagnosing laggy Wi-Fi can make you disable OFDMA But it's crucial for most modern wireless networks It's possible that your Wi-Fi feels better after disabling OFDMA, or the "AX" setting in the router settings, but the improvement is often a false positive. An older device on a modern Wi-Fi 6 network might be dealing with an unrelated issue, such as a security handshake mismatch or band-steering incompatibility. Turning off Wi-Fi 6 altogether (since many routers don't expose an isolated OFDMA setting), can seemingly make the connection faster. This is because a few devices on an uncontested network will not show any difference between OFDMA on and off. An isolated speed test may show the same (or better) performance after disabling OFDMA, but this doesn't mean anything. If you perform a better test by running simultaneous traffic on modern devices, such as a laptop, PC, smartphone, and smart TV, you'll most likely find that OFDMA enabled is the preferred scenario. Instead of trying to disable core Wi-Fi features like OFDMA, inspect physical interference, co-channel interference, channel width settings, and the presence of slower legacy devices on your Wi-Fi network. Disabling Wi-Fi features can be tempting, but you should proceed with caution When you're dealing with a laggy connection and nothing seems to fix it, you may be inclined to use drastic measures. However, disabling foundational Wi-Fi features like OFDMA will often have the opposite effect. OFDMA is key to supporting multiple devices on your Wi-Fi, and disabling it is unlikely to fix your Wi-Fi lag.
