A rite of passage, a last hurrah with pals.Yet for many brides-to-be, the moment their partner slinks back through the front door, reeking of stale lager and sweat, worry sets in.Did he succumb to the temptation of one last night of freedom? Bad behaviour from the likes of Andy Carroll, Brian McFadden and Jermaine Pennant – who were all caught cheating on their stag parties – proves that even under the glare of the public eye, husbands-to-be can easily go off the rails. To help separate post-party exhaustion from genuine guilt, we spoke to psychologists and relationship experts to uncover the subtle, telltale signs that your fiancé might have cheated on his stag do – and how to handle what comes next.Renowned matchmaker Gillian McCallum has a degree in social anthropology and has worked with hundreds of couples over the past decade. She says that if an element of doubt is creeping in, the whole relationship should be examined.‘If you are hunting for clues after a trip, the core issue usually isn’t what happened on the stag do, it is what is missing in your relationship,’ says Ms McCallum. Boy band star Brian McFadden was caught cheating on his former fiancée Kerry Katona with a lap dancer during his stag do in 2002.‘If you are genuinely terrified that a few days away with his friends will result in infidelity, it’s very simple: you shouldn’t be marrying him.‘A stag do does not invent dishonesty out of thin air, the reality is it holds a mirror up to the existing foundation, and if trust isn’t firmly established long before he packs his bag, no marriage will survive the road ahead.’Being open and honest about plans ahead of a trip or a night out is essential for building trust into a relationship, says Ms McCallum.‘In a secure, loving relationship, a stag weekend is never shrouded in cloak-and-dagger secrecy. A trustworthy partner will naturally involve you in the run-up to the trip. Matchmaker Gillian McCallum says that if doubt is creeping in, the entire relationship should be examined.‘He will casually ask for your opinion on hotel options, mention the group itinerary, or ask if you know any good local restaurants in the city they’re visiting. Natural inclusion is a hallmark of personal integrity.’But if suspicions are creeping in, Ms McCallum advises monitoring behaviour, not bank statements.‘If something has gone awry, pay attention to subtle behavioural shifts rather than trying to play private investigator.‘Secretive habits such as angling phone screens away, slipping into another room for hushed conversations, or sudden defensive coolness are key indicators of untrustworthiness.‘However, be honest about your own impulses too. Insisting on inspecting hotel bookings, demanding to see flight arrangements, or combing through credit card statements after he returns signals a deep-seated lack of trust that is, in itself, a complete deal-breaker.’ Sexologist and Relationship Psychotherapist Becky Crepsley-Fox gives her advice on which signals and behaviours to look out for post stag do.Sexologist and Relationship Psychotherapist Becky Crepsley-Fox says, ‘The main thing to look for is a change away from your partner’s usual behaviour.Crepsley-Fox says women should watch their fiancé and look out for certain signals and behaviours. She says: ‘A few things are worth noticing’.She adds: ‘Firstly, watch their reaction when you ask about the trip - if they get overly defensive and shut down any question, it can be a sign they don’t want to get caught out.‘Secondly, listen for stories that don’t quite add up and leave you with an uneasy feeling.‘And also pay attention to how they are when they come back: if they seem despondent, withdrawn or unusually sad, it may be because they’ve done something that doesn’t sit right with their values. Others go the opposite way and overcompensate - becoming suddenly attentive, extra affectionate, or turning up with a gift or two.’
