Dialogue, dignity and inclusion essential for effective access to justice: CJI Surya Kant

File | Photo Credit: PTI Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday (August 8, 2026) said dialogue, dignity and inclusion are essential for effective public access to justice, noting that the objective of legal aid is not merely to dispose of cases but also to ensure respectful treatment of people.Also read | CJI Surya Kant bats for mediation; says arbitration faces procedural hurdlesAddressing the Western Zone Regional Conference of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in Indore, he said that access to justice begins with dialogue."Access to justice begins with dialogue, and solutions should be provided according to specific problems faced by people," CJI Surya Kant said.The CJI stressed that grievances and hardships of different communities should be heard in their own languages.Describing volunteers associated with legal services authorities as part of a "judicial army," the CJI noted that they play a crucial role in taking government schemes to the grassroots level.He urged these volunteers to assist victims in securing justice in a manner that upholds dignity and inclusivity.Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and judges from the Supreme Court and High Courts attended the inaugural session of the conference.The conference brings together senior members of the judiciary, government representatives and officials associated with legal services institutions.Addressing the event, CM Yadav said the justice system has undergone significant transformations driven by modern technology."The judicial framework is being revamped through systems such as e-filing, digital records, the 'One Data-One Case' approach, virtual hearings, and modern judicial management," he said.The CM added that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, new laws have been enacted to replace centuries-old colonial-era legislation.
