Despite red alert, no power outages happened in Oriental Mindoro

(Photo from Ormeco) CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The Oriental Mindoro Grid was placed under Red Alert on September 7 (Monday) due to a projected supply deficit. But no power interruption was implemented as the actual power situation turned out better than what was initially forecast, the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (ORMECO) reported. ORMECO General Manager Humphrey Dolor attributed the favorable outcome to higher-than-expected supply from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and lower actual electricity demand driven by cooler weather. Article continues after this advertisement “While we issued a Red Alert and stood ready for load shedding based on the best data we had that morning, reality proved more favorable,” Dolor said. The electric cooperative official explained that supply providers delivered more power than projected, and consumption stayed lower than estimated. This combination of factors kept the cooperative above critical levels and there was no need to resort to strategic brownouts or Manual Load Dropping (MLD) . Had circumstances been different, ORMECO would have enforced MLD or programmed rotational brownouts used by grid operators to temporarily cut electricity in specific areas when power supply is lower than consumer demand. The cooperative observed that the tightest supply-demand margin was recorded at 2:00 p.m. at just 4.35 megawatts — close enough to trigger interruptions but was ultimately manageable. Article continues after this advertisement Nine feeder interruption incidents occurred during the critical period, but all were restored within the day, with most back in service in six minutes or less. “Manual Load Dropping is always a last resort. We only implement it when absolutely necessary to protect the grid,” Dolor said in a message on Tuesday.
