Demolish dangerous buildings in Thrissur without delay, Kerala State Human Rights Commission tells city Corporation

(Photo for representation) | Photo Credit: MUSTAFAH KK The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has directed the Thrissur Corporation to expedite the demolition of dilapidated buildings that pose a potential threat to public safety, particularly those not involved in litigation.Commission member V. Geetha issued the direction after the Corporation informed the commission that steps had been initiated to demolish such unsafe structures. The Corporation Secretary has been asked to submit a detailed status report on the action taken at the commission’s sitting in October 2026.Notice issuedAccording to the Corporation’s report, 15 buildings have been identified for immediate demolition. Two have already been pulled down, while demolition work is under way on two others. Six buildings are involved in court cases. Notices have been issued for the demolition of two government buildings, while four buildings have been earmarked for repairs.The Corporation said the survey of dilapidated buildings was carried out after dividing the city into six sectors.The report said 14 buildings identified as being in a dangerous condition could be spared demolition if they obtain structural safety certificates. Another 128 buildings can be retained after necessary repairs.The commission directed the Corporation Secretary to submit details of action taken in compliance with its directions at the October 2026 sitting.
