Democrats’ swing state ‘blue wall’ becomes a haven for socialists

The Democratic Party’s surrender to socialism is not just taking place in deep-blue cities. The socialist wing is taking over in the Midwestern swing states that have decided the last three presidential elections.Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes dropped out of the Wisconsin governor’s race, acknowledging the reality that the Democratic primary is socialist Francesca Hong’s race to lose. Hong was leading Barnes, her closest challenger, by 21 percentage points in the most recent Marquette Law School poll. In the Democratic primary in Michigan’s Senate race, the establishment rallied around Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), who enjoyed a brief lead before polls showed socialist Abdul el Sayed retaking control of the race. El Sayed leads by 9.4 points in the RealClearPolitics polling average, with an Emerson College Polling/WLNS/WOODTV poll showing him up by 15 points.Meanwhile, Salena Zito detailed for the Washington Examiner how socialists briefly took over elections in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, home to Pittsburgh. These victories took place before the “blue wave” 2018 midterm elections and, while the socialist wing has lost some of the offices it won back then, they now hold far more sway in Pennsylvania’s Democratic politics.These three states used to be the Democratic “blue wall,” the bulwark against GOP victories nationwide that Donald Trump ended up breaking in 2016. Now, they are the top three swing states, and all three are turning to socialism in varying degrees, despite socialism’s lack of popularity. El Sayed, for example, is performing far worse in general election polling against Republican Mike Rogers than Stevens. And one of the most popular figures in Pennsylvania politics is Sen. That is why Hong is lying about her past positions, claiming, for example, that she has never supported abolishing the U.S. Senate despite explicitly calling to “Abolish the Senate” in 2021. Despite being a regular at Democratic Socialists of America events, El-Sayed is trying to reject the socialist label, and Hong has similarly begun distancing herself from her DSA associations.Democratic Party voters in swing states have become so enamored with socialism that they are willing to abandon political sense to pursue it. The Democratic base, even in competitive states, has fallen to the far-left wing of the party, and it will take resounding losses by el Sayed, Hong, and other socialist Democrats to break that fever.
