Delta Air Lines is a key player in the transatlantic market, and the Atlanta-based SkyTeam founding member ranks second of the big three US legacy carriers (in front of American Airlines and behind United Airlines) when it comes to flights to Europe. At many of its hubs, it offers routes to multiple European cities, but not everywhere. Indeed, five US airports have just one Delta route to Europe. This strategy marks an interesting departure from its multi-destination approach at other Delta hubs, but highlights the need for transatlantic connectivity even at less important bases. The routes in question are clearly designed for intra-alliance connectivity, as transatlantic coverage across these five airports is concentrated into two European SkyTeam hubs. Two Corridors Link Florida With The Netherlands Being the home of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines , the flag carrier of the Netherlands, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is one of the most important SkyTeam hubs out there. With its impressive onward connectivity, Schiphol is the sole transatlantic destination for Delta from two major Florida airports: Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, the four weekly flights on the Tampa-Amsterdam route are currently split between the Airbus A330-300 and the A330-900neo. Going forward, however, they will all be operated by the A330-900neo. Meanwhile, the Orlando flights run daily using the A330-900neo, but they are set to cease in late March. These flights are set to run daily, with, once again, the A330-900neo from the A330neo series as Delta's aircraft of choice on this transatlantic route. On existing routes, Delta prefers the A350-900 for flights from Los Angeles to Paris. These will run daily until late October, before dropping to three flights a week over the winter. The IATA Summer Schedule, starting in late March, will then bring back daily service. Elsewhere, Delta is about to switch from the A330-300 to the A330-900neo on its thrice-weekly Cincinnati-CDG flights, which will then be operated daily by the Boeing 767-400ER from late March.
