After working for an indie game studio and acting as the family's go-to technician for all computer issues, he found his passion for writing and decided to use his skill set to write about all things tech. Since beginning his writing career, he has written for many different publications such as WorldStart, Listverse, and MakeTechEasier. However, after finding his home at MakeUseOf in February 2019, he would eventually move on to its sister site, XDA, to bring the latest and greatest in Windows, Linux, and DIY electronics. Up to Core Ultra 7 (16-core), 64GB RAM, and onboard NPU for local AI - powerful without sacrificing ruggedness. Pro Rugged 14: lighter at 4.7 lbs, IP53 and 3ft drop rating, plus Nvidia RTX Pro 500 Blackwell GPU. This week has been an excellent one for people who love devices that don't break in a stiff wind. We only just reported on Panasonic's Toughbook range the other day, and now Dell is showing off its own super-tough selection of "Pro Rugged" laptops, including the 13 Extreme and the 14. The Dell Pro Rugged 13 Extreme and 14 are powerhouses you can depend on You can choose between extreme endurance or graphical prowess Credit: Dell To start off, the Dell Pro Rugged 13 Extreme is designed to outlast anything a workplace can throw at it. It can withstand 6-foot drops and operate in extreme temperatures from -20°F to 145°F. It also has an IP66 rating, meaning it's dust-tight and shielded against high-pressure water jets. Sure, not many people are working while being actively jetted with water, but it does mean the Pro Rugged 13 will definitely withstand torrential downpours of rain while you work outside. Even in freezing conditions, the laptop’s enhanced cold-boot capability means it can boot up when it's -4°F on battery power alone. Fortunately, it doesn't sacrifice power to achieve all that survivability. Under the hood, we're looking at an Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor, which can be upgraded up to the 16-core Ultra 7 368H. It has 64GB of RAM and even has its own NPU to process on-board AI models. It also sports a 13.3-inch FHD display that can max out at 1,400 nits of brightness, and it's protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. If you like your laptops to be tough but you don't need things to operate at the extremes, Dell also introduced the Pro Rugged 14. It's not quite as tough as the 13 Extreme, offering an IP53 rating for dust and splashing water and a 3-foot drop rating. However, it trades heavy-duty armor for a lighter footprint (starting at 4.7 lbs) and a huge graphics upgrade, including an Nvidia RTX Pro 500 Blackwell GPU.
