Delhi to issue Family Card for every household to unify welfare data

The Delhi government plans to issue a Family Card to every household to create a verified family database, helping departments coordinate and improve delivery of welfare and healthcare schemes.The Delhi government is planning to introduce a 'Family Card' for every household in the national capital to create a unified and verified database of families in the city, officials said on Thursday. The proposed card will carry information on family members, whether they are receiving benefits under existing government schemes, and details such as births and deaths.Officials said the database is meant to help the government plan future public welfare and healthcare schemes and projects. The move also comes as the government prepares to roll out the recently approved Delhi Lakshmi Yojna, under which eligible women will get monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500, subject to certain conditions."As part of the initiative, the government will issue a Family Card to every household in Delhi. The aim is to create an authentic and verified database, which will help us in planning future public welfare, healthcare schemes and projects," a senior official said. Similar steps have been taken in neighbouring Haryana, which has launched the 'Parivar Pehchan Patra', a family identification document containing details about the family unit.An official said the card would also help improve coordination among departments. "The family card will provide better coordination among departments, for example, vaccination among children, this card will help in tracking whether all the children are vaccinated or not," the officer added. The Delhi government on Tuesday approved the Delhi Lakshmi Yojna, aimed at providing financial aid to women. The scheme will provide Rs 2,500 a month to eligible women aged 21 to 60 years. It excludes women with more than three living children and those from households with annual power consumption of more than 2,400 units. The government has earmarked Rs 5,110 crore in the 2026-27 Budget for the scheme.Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the limit on the number of children had been included for a reason. "Under the scheme we have added that condition because, indirectly, we also want to help those women who maybe pressurised into giving birth to more children for the sake of boy, we have observed this in lower middle class families, so this scheme will support those women as well," she said. Under the proposed norms, applicants will have to submit a self-declaration stating that they have been residents of Delhi for at least 10 years and have no criminal record, a senior official said.According to the scheme guidelines approved by the cabinet, women between 21 and 60 years of age whose family income is up to Rs 2.50 lakh a year will be eligible to apply.
