Café Mondegar Shut: FDA Suspends Licence Over Hygiene, Food Safety LapsesThe Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the food business licence of Mumbai's historic Café Mondegar following an inspection that flagged multiple food safety and hygiene violations. Operating since 1932, the landmark restaurant faced action after officials found hot food was not kept above the mandated 60 degrees Celsius and cold storage was not maintained below 5 degrees Celsius. Inspectors also noted improper defrosting, inadequate rapid cooling of cooked food, improper equipment sanitisation, damp flooring, and an inadequate drainage system posing cross-contamination risks. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Munde stated that the suspension stems from non-compliance with Schedule 4 regulations under licensing rules. The measure forms part of a wider statewide food safety crackdown during Ganesh Utsav, during which the agency seized over 4,138 kilograms of dairy and sweet products, alongside 30 litres of liquid milk valued at over 15.5 lakh rupees, and held hygiene workshops for festival organisers.
