Delhi Master Plan 2047 promises 40 lakh new homes, metro expansion to 695 km

The Delhi Master Plan 2047 was unveiled on Thursday, with Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal saying around 40 lakh homes will be built in the city and the metro rail network will be expanded to 695 km by 2047 to support a growing population.The plan projects Delhi’s population at 3.20 crore and sets out a broader push to expand housing and transport while preserving 180 sq km of the Yamuna floodplains and the Ridge area. It is aimed at making the city more inclusive and economically vibrant, while shifting urban planning from a regulatory approach to a development-oriented one.Addressing a joint press conference with Delhi Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lal said the city’s expected population growth would put pressure on development. He said fast development of Delhi would be ensured in the coming years alongside the preservation of ecologically sensitive areas.Under the master plan, around 30-40 lakh new flats are to be built to meet rising housing demand. Public transport infrastructure, including the metro rail network, buses and six new Regional Rapid Transit System corridors, will also be developed in the city, he said. Khattar said the Transit Oriented Development Policy would facilitate affordable housing and added that no farm houses would be allowed in low-density areas. He also said building height restrictions had been removed, except in some areas.Data centres, co-working spaces and cloud kitchens have been placed under the new economies category in the plan. Gupta said the long-awaited MPD 2047 would revitalise the city through its focus on affordable housing and stronger transport facilities.
