Delhi honours 116 teachers, pledges school repairs and curriculum overhaul

The Delhi government honoured around 116 teachers and principals with state awards on Teachers’ Day, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta using the occasion to highlight gaps in school infrastructure and curriculum.Speaking at the Shikshak Mahakumbh Award event at Thyagraj Stadium on Saturday, Gupta said the government wanted to take Delhi’s education system to “great heights”, but first needed to fix basic problems in schools.She said work was already under way on repairs, toilets, water facilities, maintenance, whitewashing and other infrastructure needs.BEFORE BIG PLANS, BASIC FIXESGupta said the government had inherited a weak foundation and was now working to address deficiencies in schools. “Many schools had very poor toilet facilities,” she said, recalling an inspection of a reputed school where she found that a toilet did not even have a gate.“How would our girl students have been using it?” she asked. The Chief Minister said improving school infrastructure was essential before the government could pursue its larger plans for education.She also assured teachers that the government would continue working to strengthen the system and create better opportunities for children.FROM TOILETS TO THE CURRICULUMThe government’s focus, Gupta said, is not limited to physical infrastructure.She said officials were also reviewing courses and curriculum, with the Education Department and Education Minister Ashish Sood working on the issues.“As long as our government is in power, all good work concerning the education and future of children will be undertaken,” Gupta said, adding that the government would also work to address whatever deficiencies remain.The remarks came as teachers and principals gathered for the annual Teachers’ Day recognition programme.TEACHERS TAKE CENTRE STAGEThe awards recognised around 116 teachers and principals for their contribution to Delhi’s school education system.Gupta said teachers would remain an important part of the government’s efforts to improve education and secure a better future for children.Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, MP Basuri Swaraj, Education Minister Ashish Sood and other officials were also present at the event.The programme therefore served two purposes: recognising teachers for their work while setting out the government’s immediate education priorities — fixing school facilities, reviewing curriculum and addressing gaps that remain across the capital’s education system.- EndsPublished By: India Today Web Desk Published On: Sep 5, 2026 16:00 IST
