Friends Catering’s yearly Deepavali Sweets Mela has just started and the staff are busy packing sweets and murukku for customers. Mixture packets stacked atop each other resemble a hillock at one corner; trays are piled with milk sweets, badushas, ladoos, adhirasams, Mysorepa, and gulab jamuns; in the kitchen at the back, oil is being heated for live jangiri, their specialty. This includes the Bounty-inspired sweet that consists of tawa-fried coconut shreds and wrapped in a layer of chocolate. Friends’ version of the chocolate bar is dense and chewy, and a definite win.Preparations for the sweets festival began a few days ago, with the aduppu pooja or stove worship. “All the ingredients are arranged in front of the stoves, for which we perform an arti,” says Ganesan R, Subhashree’s uncle. “To signify an auspicious beginning, we first boil milk, following which we first make the ladoo,” he adds. The yearly festival features a variety of sweets and savouries like ladoo, badusha, mixture and murukku | Photo Credit: PERIASAMY M Ganesan is involved in the making of the savouries such as murukku and mixture. “Our thattai and kai murukku are among the most popular savoury snacks,” says Subhashree. “Both are made by hand, and are fried in coconut oil.” Another Friends specialty is the coated badusha that comes with a translucent white coating of sugar syrup. “Unlike the regular jeera badusha, this version is not sweet on the inside; the thin coating of sugar makes way for a soft, plain inside,” explains Ganesan. What sets apart their offerings is the variety. When it comes to ladoo, for instance, Subhashree explains that there are six kinds such as classic, rava, Thirupathi, rose, maa, and the moti; Mysorepak comes in many variations, a white one made of cashews, a golden yellow variety that is soft; and a slightly firm variety. Friends also has a line of gift hampers that range from ₹424 to ₹925. These are ideal for corporate gifting. | Photo Credit: PERIASAMY M The nut-based sweets are priced at ₹1300 per kilogram. These contain minimal milk and sugar, with the nuts providing the necessary richness and flavour. For instance, their range of Real Fruit Treats, Subhashree explains, are flavoured by the puree of fruits such as pineapple, blueberry, kiwi, and strawberry. Mysurpa by Friends Catering in Coimbatore | Photo Credit: PERIASAMY M If there is one thing that most customers buy, it is a box of the Deepavali legiyam, a medicinal paste of herbs simmered for hours. This is had the first thing in the morning on the festival day to aid in digestion of sweets and a heavy festive meal. Every year, Ganesan makes a massive batch of the medicine. “It has around 120 herbs such as thippili, elakkai, krambu, vetiver, among others,” he says.
