National squash player Declan James, August 20, 2026 JAMAICA’S Declan James’ impressive run at the Pan American Games Qualifiers came to an end in the semi-final when he lost to Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas in Asuncion, Paraguay. Cardenas, ranked No 12 in the world and No 2 among the qualifiers, defeated the No 23-ranked James 11-8, 11-4, 11-3. James had advanced to the semi-final without dropping a match. After receiving a bye in the round of 64, he defeated Daniel Carl Ince of Guyana 11-7, 11-1, 11-3 in the round of 32. He then overcame Shahjahan Khan of the United States 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7 in the round of 16 before beating Guatemala’s Josue Enriquez 12-10, 11-2, 11-6 in the quarter-final. James was ranked No 3 among the qualifiers. Tahjia Lumley won his opening match in the round of 64, defeating D’Vario Thompson of Bermuda 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, but lost his next match to Brazil’s Diego T Gobbi 11-7, 11-4, 11-3. Chris Binnie did not finish his opening match in the round of 64. The Pan American Games Qualifiers are being held in Asuncion from August 15 to 19.
