Published Oct 25, 2026, 10:00 PM EDT Mark has been a comic book journalist for over 15 years and has interviewed comic book creators like Gail Simone and Caspar Wijngaard. And when he's not writing, he's working on beating his record of 1,200 comics read in a year. No matter the era, it isn’t easy to run a comic company. There’s a constant need to keep readers intrigued with new stories and characters. If you’re a company like DC Comics that’s been around for close to a century, that can prove more and more difficult as time goes on. Luckily, new creators are up for the job, and as of two years ago, DC debuted the Absolute Universe. Leading the way were accomplished and brilliant writers Jason Aaron, Kelly Thompson, and Scott Snyder. Each of them had the difficult job of taking DC Comics' Trinity of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, and changing their backstory and their futures. It was a bold move that worked perfectly. Recreating characters has been done before, and often. There are both Marvel’s Ultimate Universes and the various Elseworlds from DC. The difference between those and the Absolute Universe is that this has crossed over into mainstream media. The latter has helped give the comic book industry a needed boost. The Absolute Universe Balances Tradition With Something New Most comic book readers will continue to buy new issues weekly or catch up with their favorite titles when they can. Sadly, there are so many comic books to read that it can become difficult to keep up with everything. That means that sometimes some titles have to be left behind to be bought on a different day, or not at all. The Absolute Universe's ability to appeal to everyone means that they’re rarely left on the shelves. One of the many things the Absolute Universe gets right is keeping the souls of the characters alive. Superman is still doing everything he can to protect everyone worldwide. Wonder Woman remains a protector of the people whose kindness stands out beyond her immense power. Batman is Gotham’s terrifying savior whose promise to his father keeps his mission alive. However, within all of that are new elements to them. Wonder Woman can still trade blows with the most powerful beings in the universe, but her strongest attribute is magic. Batman is scarier thanks to his massive size and being unafraid to throw his weight around. Superman could still be considered Earth’s greatest hero, but he remains insecure about what his purpose is. This is leading to new stories from classic characters, catalyzing a much-needed change that comic book fans appreciate. The Absolute Universe Is More Realistic Escapism is an important part of comic books, but the real world can’t be ignored. Each of the writers of the various titles has found a perfect balance of both. For example, both Absolute Superman and Absolute Green Arrow have added the disgusting world of child trafficking to their stories. Instead of showing all the lurid details, they’re explained just enough for readers to get the point. It shows that fantasy and realism can coexist. Beyond the ghastly things in the world, the Absolute Universe manages to bring joy too. The friendship of John Henry Irons has given Kal-El a reason to smile. This is something he’s lacked for years. During Absolute Wonder Woman 2026 Annual, Diana was ready to sacrifice her life to cure Medusa of her curse. It was a beautiful moment and one of the best single issues of 2026. In Absolute Martian Manhunter, the worst of the world was shown, but it ended with a feeling of hope for humanity. Counting the one-shots and miniseries, there are over ten titles in DC Comics' Absolute Universe, with more coming. Hopefully, this universe will go on for years. There’s a ton of potential, more characters to unpack, and it has given readers (new and old) something to look forward to every week.
