Dark Knights of Steel II and the Dark Knights of Steel comics that came before it have introduced a ton of excellent redesigns for iconic DC characters, including Batman. It’s outstanding to see how Superman might look dressed in royal garb as Prince Kal-El of the kingdom of Metropolis, for example, and many characters have been given high-fantasy archetypes that suit their original iconography well, such as Harley Quinn being the House of El’s court jester and royal adviser. As for Dark Knights of Steel’s villains, it’s been more of a hodgepodge. For instance, the Green Man is maybe Dark Knights of Steel’s biggest miss so far, taking a handful of characters and concepts and arguably not coming to a satisfying resolution with any of them. That said, Dark Knights of Steel II is finally bringing back who could be the best antagonist the series has had yet, and he’s back with a superb design. Dark Knights Of Steel II Features A Glorious New Bane Design October 2026 DC solicitations have revealed the cover for Dark Knights of Steel II #4, which has unceremoniously revealed that Dark Knights of Steel: Tales From the Three Kingdoms’ King’s Bane is back. The King’s Bane was a wonderfully novel twist on the lore of the iconic Batman villain Bane, and his design in Dark Knights of Steel: Tales From the Three Kingdoms’ medieval fantasy universe was exceptional. In Dark Knights of Steel II, the King’s Bane is once again decked out in heavy, knightly armor, though he looks to have received some upgrades. Firstly, he’s dressed fully in armor now, having ditched hand wraps for gauntlets, and he wears a draping cloth over his torso that is perhaps meant to be a part of his tabard or surcoat, but bearing no coat of arms, insignia, or anything at all. Most notably, however, is that the King’s Bane doesn’t appear to have the green tubes anymore. It’s possible that they’re simply behind his head and not visible due to the framing of the cover artwork, but it’d be terrific if he’s found a way to recover from his broken back without the need to be pumped intravenously with Dr. Crane’s magic. The King’s Bane Is Released From The House Of Els’ Dungeon Interestingly, this cover is quite the spoiler for anyone who has read Dark Knights of Steel: Tales From the Three Kingdoms. In this prequel one-shot, we learn that the King’s Bane requests to teach a young Bruce Wayne “how to kill a monster.” Bruce deceives the King’s Bane into training him—not to slay the Els, as the King’s Bane would like, but to hunt actual monsters and any threats to the House of El, like the King’s Bane himself. At the moment when the King’s Bane believes Bruce will strike the Els down, Bruce uses the knowledge the King’s Bane taught him and cuts the green tubes that imbued the King’s Bane with magic, incapacitating him. He’s then taken to the Els’ dungeons, and has not been seen since, until this cover revealed that he would, in fact, be returning for the sequel series. The solicitation for Dark Knights of Steel II #4 reads as follows: THE SUICIDE SQUAD TAKES AIM FOR THE THRONE! General Amanda Waller’s traitorous gambit for the throne has come to fruition, and she’s recruited a murderous squad to cut down any who dares stand in her way. Just how deep does the rot of her corruption run? And who will be left standing once she is crowned regent of the Kingdom of Metropolis at the zenith of her power? The solicitation doesn’t mention the King’s Bane, but him appearing on the main cover of this issue suggests that he might be freed from his captivity by the end of issue #3 (perhaps by General Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad), or during issue #4, and that means he’ll also either be given back the magic that sustains him or not need them anymore, for whatever reason. Either way, it’ll be fantastic to see the King’s Bane and Batman confront each other after all this time, and it’d be neat to have other side quests and subplots followed through on from Dark Knights of Steel, Dark Knights of Steel: Tales From the Three Kingdoms, and Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter in Dark Knights of Steel II.
