DC resident asks for $3 million for altercation where National Guard detained her on front porch

An Army combat veteran is suing the Idaho National Guard for $3 million for an incident in which she claims she was assaulted at her home in Washington while being detained on her front porch.The American Civil Liberties Union of the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Anna King, who was sitting on her front porch on the evening of May 8 when National Guard members breached her front gate, told her she was being detained, and “violently restrained” her.“The Guard members pinned her to the ground, kneeled on her back, and handcuffed her tightly, refusing to loosen the handcuffs after she complained,” the ACLU of D.C. said in a news release. “King suffered significant injuries from the incident, particularly in her wrist, which required surgery. King, a retired Army captain, continues to experience significant detrimental physical and mental effects of this assault.” In a two-minute video released by the ACLU, three National Guard members can be seen speaking with King as she tells them to “get away from me right now.” As the service members continue speaking with King, she yells, “Get the f*** away from me right now,” and waves what appears to be a white poster board in their direction.As King attempts to go back into her home on New York Avenue Northwest, two of the men wrestle her to the ground as she yells, “f— you.” The third individual is standing to the side and appears to be on the phone, and King continues screaming and yelling profanities.“When armed troops brutalize Americans on U.S. soil, something is very wrong,” said Scott Brooks, a partner at Levy Firestone Muse who filed on King’s behalf in conjunction with the ACLU. “The attack on Anna King should concern us all.”King had banners outside her home criticizing the National Guard’s presence in the district as part of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, according to reporting by WUSA 9.According to the claim seeking $3 million under the Federal Tort Claims Act, King had asked why she was being detained and was given no answer. Metropolitan Police were called to the scene to assist the National Guard. King was handcuffed for 17 minutes with plastic restraints. When she complained the cuffs were too tight, MPD officers attempted to cut the plastic restraints, but they were allegedly so tight officers couldn’t slide the blade under to remove them.The claim said King was being detained for an incident that occurred two days prior, in which she poured an unknown liquid on a group of National Guard members.“This assertion, however is baseless, and to date no criminal charges have been filed against Ms. King in connection with any such incident,” the claim reads.In addition to injuries caused by the handcuffs and being shoved to the ground, the claim alleges the incident “reactivated” King’s post-traumatic stress disorder that she was diagnosed with as a result of her deployment to Iraq.NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT IN DC EXTENDED UNTIL 2029King’s lawsuit against the National Guard is one of more than 50 filed across the United States by the ACLU for federal agents “brutalizing” residents, the release said.The Washington Examiner reached out to the Idaho National Guard for comment.
