DC has revealed new details of Green Lantern lore's new ultra-powerful Lantern type, setting the stage for the franchise's new era. Here's everything we know, and why it's so crucial to everything that comes next. Recent issues of Green Lantern Corps have transformed the franchise. Not only did all the different Corps unify into a single group, but they found a way to access the entire Emotional Spectrum, turning the average Lantern into a 'Chrome Lantern' with seemingly limitless power. That was possible because of a new agreement struck with the godlike Emotional Entities, each merging with a specific Lantern. These Lanterns embody each of the former Corps, and are known as 'Alpha Lanterns.' Now, DC fills in the blanks of what that actually means... The Era of the Alpha Lanterns Has Begun DC's new preview for Green Lantern Corps #21 - from Morgan Hampton, Vasco Georgiev, Serg Acuña, Juan José Ryp, Arif Prianto, Matt Herms and Dave Sharpe - sees Jessica Cruz briefing the Alpha Lanterns about their new role in the unified Corps. Fans had a LOT of questions about what role the Alpha Lanterns would fill, and in just a few pages, DC gives them answers... First, the Alpha Lanterns are the new leaders of the unified Corps, replacing the Guardians of the Universe who once created and commanded the Green Lantern Corps. They'll be "at the forefront of every decision" and have been chosen for their ability to work with Lanterns of other colors. It seems they're also essentially feeding power to the rest of the Corps. Each Alpha Lantern is merged with their chosen Emotional Entity, and is charged with keeping the godlike beast happy and 'fed' on their relevant emotion. In that sense, they're replacing the gigantic Power Batteries that used to power each Corps, and will have to actively negotiate with the Entities to keep the Corps at full power. Finally, the role of 'Alpha Lantern' is a title that can be passed on. While each member of the team has been chosen by their Emotional Entity, the Entity can pass onto a new host if it chooses to do so. The six Alpha Lanterns who make up the team may change over time, with both the Emotional Entities and the rest of the Corps passing judgment on their leadership. Who Are Green Lantern's Alpha Lanterns, And Why Are They Unique? DC just made it clear that the Alpha Lanterns are the new heart of the Corps, acting as both their governing body and the source of their power. Each Alpha Lantern is a powerful hero (or antihero) who has a long history with their specific emotion, detailed below. The group will be supported by Guy Gardner - who has communed with the Book of Oa as 'the Allsight' - and Jessica Cruz, who appears to be an ambassador between the Alpha Lanterns and the Corps at large. Green Lantern's Alpha Lanterns Are Waiting On a Final Member While the Alpha Lanterns are intended to represent the entire Emotional Spectrum, there's one missing - the embodiment of the Violet light of Love, and host of the Emotional Entity known as the Predator. The preview reveals the Predator carrying out a bizarre experiment/ritual, seemingly set on creating its ideal host. It's therefore likely that there's still one member left to join the Alpha Lanterns, completing a team who will officially replace the Guardians of the Universe as the raw power and cosmic authority behind the transformed Green Lantern Corps.
