Sense and Sensibility Cast Reveals Biggest Changes From Book to MovieAs much as to love is to burn, to star in a Jane Austin adaptation is to leave the full beat at home. That was the case for Daisy Edgar-Jones on Sense and Sensibility as director Georgia Oakley and hair and makeup designer Nadia Stacey laid down a bare-faced rule on set: no makeup for Jones and costar Esmé Creed-Miles, with the actual makeup for the movie kept to a minimum, too. "Nadia was like—and Georgia too—they were like, ‘We're having no makeup in this film,’ to Esme and I. We were like, ‘Not even ChapStick?’ She was like, ‘Nothing,’” Edgar-Jones recalled on the Oct. 15 episode of Vogue’s The Run-Through podcast. “Then Esme and I would sneak a little bit of ChapStick onto set and Georgia would be like, ‘Take it off. I see. I can see.’” For the 28-year-old, it marked the first time she wore no makeup on screen, aside from a little bit of “sun cream and some added freckles,” as her and Creed-Miles’ characters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood spent a lot of time in the sun. Ultimately, Edgar-Jones found that it influenced her everyday morning routine. “I felt quite liberated by it,” she explained. “I find in life when I play a character, I start to dress like them and be like them. I stopped wearing makeup for a while, and I really enjoyed it.”Focus FeaturesAnd it wasn’t just makeup that was banned from the set of the adaptation—which also stars Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay and Fiona Shaw—as Oakley also wanted it to be “a no phone set,” which helped highlight a strong foundation between Edgar-Jones and her costars. “We just sat and had picnics together and chatted and just lived,” she said. “I suppose nearly like what the Dashwoods would be doing, just being bored together, which was really beautiful.” So, the Normal People star is more than ready to bring this fresh perspective to her next movies.Chloe Kern/WireImage“In my early career I remember some of my favorite parts of filming would just be sitting and hearing stories from other actors in the green room while you wait for hours for the cameras to set up,” Edgar-Jones noted. “And I feel like as time's gone on, that's maybe changed.” “Maybe just because we can all be distracted,” she mused, “and I really loved that we were all able to share our various experiences with one another. So it was really special.” For a look at more films headed to the big screen this year, keep reading.Amazon MGM StudiosVerity - October 2, 2026Adapted from Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, this psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity.
