Dad ‘who only ever won a cabbage’ scoops £4m Omaze mega-mansion & is throwing massive housewarming party

A DAD who says the biggest thing he’d ever won before was a cabbage has landed a £4million Georgian mansion – and is already planning a huge housewarming party. Wayne, his wife Catherine and their two teenage children are now deciding whether to move in permanently or keep the house as an investment. He said: “The most memorable thing I’d won before this was a cabbage in 1977, so a £4 million mansion is quite the upgrade. “I was with my brass band friends on a trip somewhere up north in the 70s and we all entered a meat draw, buying a load of tickets for 2p each, and I ended up winning the cabbage, it’s been a running joke ever since. “It hasn’t stopped me entering prize draws though. I’m a dreamer who always wanted to win a big house. That cabbage started my winning streak.” Most read in Money Wayne was working from home while looking after the couple’s children when he received the life-changing phone call. His wife Catherine was at a Gordon Ramsay cookery class and Wayne admitted he thought someone was winding him up. He said: “I thought I was being ‘punked’ at first, so I didn’t say anything to my wife until I was 100% sure. Even now, it’s hard to believe I’ve won a £4 million house.” Catherine rushed home and the family celebrated with neighbours using champagne and the gluten-free sticky toffee pudding she had made earlier that day. Catherine, 53, said: “I can’t believe what an amazing venue the house will be to host parties in. Multiple fridges plus a wine cellar – this is going to be a party house.” She is also a huge fan of Bridgerton and said the property immediately reminded her of the hit Netflix drama. Catherine said: “I felt like I was on the Bridgerton set. “Bridgerton is filmed in Bath and my sisters and I are big fans, so we’re already thinking about having a Bridgerton themed party here. How perfect would that be?” For Wayne, the win was made bittersweet after losing his mum last month. He said: “I used to call her my ‘one in a million’ and now I’ve won this home which is worth millions. She would have loved it. “I wish she knew about this, maybe she did, maybe she’s looking down on us, maybe she had something to do with this. If she was still here, she’d be ecstatic.” The family say the windfall will help secure their children’s future and give them opportunities they never imagined. The latest Omaze draw also raised £4.5million for English Heritage. The money will help fund a new learning centre at Stonehenge, with the campaign backed by comedian Bill Bailey.
