Celeste responded: “of course its yours David,” according to a detective’s testimony. The court heard of another exchange in June of that year, when Celeste was 13-years-old and Burke 19. “What [if] the first abortion didn’t work?” she asked, according to prosecutors. Burke’s device also contained photos of Celeste during the alleged sexual abuse, prosecutors said on Friday. He allegedly stared directly at gruesome photos shown in court of Celeste Rivas’ decapitated and decomposed remains that were found stuffed in a body bag. Celeste’s mother, Mercedes Rivas Hernandez, became visibly emotional and had to be led from the court as details of some of the pictures were described. Burke met Celeste online in January 2022 when she was just 11 years old and began a sexual relationship with her when she was 13, court filing alleged. At the time, Burke was an 18-year-old with a record deal after his breakout single, Romantic Homicide, successfully cracked the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Burke was arrested on April 16, eight months after Celeste’s decomposed remains were uncovered in Hollywood. The singer has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder with special circumstances, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. Prosecutors said Burke fatally stabbed Celeste with a sharp object on April 23, 2025, at his rented home in the Hollywood Hills in order to cover up his sexual abuse of the teenager. He feared his sexual crimes against her would ruin his career, prosecutors said during his arraignment in April. “Knowing he had to silence the victim before she ruined his music career as she had threatened, very soon after her arrival at his home, the defendant stabbed the victim to death multiple times and stood by while she bled out,” prosecutors said. As Celeste bled out, Burke allegedly mutilated her remains with two chainsaws he purchased on Amazon in an inflatable pool in his garage. Prosecutors allege Burke later stored her remains in the front trunk of his Tesla and went on tour. Officials said Burke took “horrifying measures to destroy and discard the victim’s body.” Prosecutors obtained text messages between Burke and Celeste on the night they believe she was murdered. “The messages reveal the victim’s jealousy over defendant’s relationship with other women, as defendant led her to believe they had a future together,” court documents read. “She became extremely upset and threatened to disclose damaging information about her relationship with defendant to end his career and destroy his life.” The preliminary hearing is expected to last several days and a judge will determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to take Burke to trial. Burke faces the death penalty, if he goes to trial and is convicted. He is being held without bail. September 7 – Rivas turns 15 years old. September 8 – The Los Angeles Police Department discovered a dismembered body wrapped in plastic in the trunk of D4vd’s impounded Tesla. September 17 – The decomposing body is identified as Celeste Rivas. September 18 – D4vd’s house is searched overnight, and investigators take a computer and other evidence. D4vd continues his tour with a show in Seattle. Rivas’s family breaks their silence on their GoFundMe page. September 19 – D4vd cancels the rest of his tour. September 23 – Rivas’s body is released to her family. It’s revealed that D4vd and his manager have broken their lease and left the house that was raided in Hollywood.
