Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Almost Got Its Own Game, Report Suggests

CDPR Reportedly Greenlit A Cyberpunk 2077 Spin-Off Game Based On Edgerunners Published Jul 28, 2026, 12:55 PM EDT Sign in to your TheGamer account CD Projekt Red reportedly greenlit a Cyberpunk 2077 spin-off, partnering with indie devs to make it happen. This spin-off was said to be based on the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime and would have been a very different genre from the main game. This is according to information gathered by MP1st. Citing a developer’s portfolio, MP1st says that CDPR was working with WayForward, best known for Shantae and River City Girls, on this spin-off. The game would have reportedly been a brawler, featuring characters from Edgerunners. The Shantae Devs Were Reportedly Working On A New Cyberpunk Game, And It’s Unclear If It’s Still In Development As per the report, the developer (who MP1st has kept anonymous) lists an “unannounced CDPR Cyberpunk R&D project” on their resume. The project was codenamed “Gemini”, with the dev saying they worked on it from 2025-26. It’s unclear if this means the game was cancelled, or if this is just when the dev left WayForward. The game is described as a 2.5D brawler, like River City Girls. Mentions of rollback and online play make it clear it was being made with multiplayer in mind - something that would be new for the Cyberpunk series. This would line up with what CDPR has done with the series since Cyberpunk 2077’s launch. When Edgerunners proved to be a hit, its cast of characters started to pop up in other games, including a recent Wuthering Waves event. It would make sense for CDPR to capitalise on this even further by publishing a brand new game with David, Lucy, and the rest of the gang as playable characters. A brawler would be a good fit for them, too. CDPR has also opened itself up to outsourcing projects in recent years. The remake of the first Witcher game is being handled by Fool’s Theory, while recent Cyberpunk 2077 updates were rolled out thanks to Virtuos. This is likely to keep the franchises alive in between mainline entries, since development times are only getting longer. Even if this fighting game was cancelled, it at least tells us that CDPR saw the value in an Edgerunners game at some point. While we wait to see if anything comes of that, we’re finally getting another season of Edgerunners this fall.
