Cyberpunk 2 will have multiplayer mode according to job listing

| Games News Writer Published October 27, 2026 5:36pm Updated October 27, 2026 5:36pm Night City with friends (CD Projekt Red) The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel will have multiplayer elements according to a new job listing, after the studio axed a standalone multiplayer spin-off. Cyberpunk 2077 might be nearly six years old now but it’s still getting new updates, most recently to tie in with season two of Netflix’s animated prequel series Edgerunners. Developer CD Projekt Red rolled out Patch 2.5 last week, which added a new side quest, gear, and a radio station connected to the show. It’s unclear if this will be the last update for the title (history says it probably won’t be), but it’s clear the studio has one eye on the confirmed sequel based on a recent job listing. As confirmed last year, Cyberpunk 2 is in the pre-production phase at CD Projekt Red. It’s set to be the studio’s next major game after The Witcher 4, which is scheduled for 2028, so you probably shouldn’t expect it until 2030 at the earliest. While we know nothing about Cyberpunk 2, a new job listing suggests it will feature some kind of multiplayer component. Want GTA 6 news? As noted in a Lead Quest Programmer listing at the studio’s Canadian office, a subheading for skills that would be ‘nice to have’ includes an ‘understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronisation for game state/quests’. It doesn’t state if this multiplayer element is competitive or co-op, but Cyberpunk 2077 prides itself on its highly detailed sci-fi dystopian open world – so a co-op element feels like it would be a difficult ask, unless it’s only tied to specific missions. It could be something on the level of GTA Online, that exists outside of the main campaign. However, it’s unclear if CD Projekt Red has ambitions to take on Rockstar’s brand of open world chaos, as they design their sandbox worlds with a very different focus in mind. Alternatively, it could be a set of multiplayer minigames within the world (an online combat arena?), but it’s an enticing prospect whatever it is. Cyberpunk 2077 was originally going to have a standalone multiplayer spin-off, but CD Projekt Red scrapped it following the main game’s botched launch. As such, it’s possible those plans will be incorporated into the next mainline game. Speaking about the game’s cancellation in 2021, CD Projekt Red president Adam Kiciński said: ‘Previously we hinted that our next triple-A would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we have decided to reconsider this now. ‘Given our new more systematic and agile approach, instead of primarily focusing on one big online experience or game, we are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day.’ Will we see double the Keanu Reeves?
