CSIR-CCMB Chief Scientist Govindhaswamy Umapathy elected as Fellow of Indian National Science Academy

A pioneer in conservation physiology in India, Dr. Umapathy developed non-invasive hormone-monitoring techniques that have been validated across 30 species, ranging from frogs and red pandas to tigers and elephants. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of wildlife health and conservation.His landmark studies demonstrated how anthropogenic disturbances can trigger glucocorticoid-mediated physiological stress in endangered animal populations, influencing their survival and reproductive success. The findings have helped reshape wildlife management strategies and firmly established wildlife endocrinology as a key component of conservation science in India.Dr. Umapathy has earlier been elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), Fellow of the Telangana Academy of Sciences (FTASc), and Fellow of Reproduction and Endocrinology (FRE), Society for Reproduction and Endocrinology, India, as per a press release issued on Thursday (September 10, 2026).
