Criminal Minds Is Killed Off After 20 Seasons

Criminal Minds' Zach Gilford Speaks Out After Shocking Season 19 Finale ExitCriminal Minds is building its final profile. The crime procedural—renamed Criminal Minds: Evolution after moving from CBS to Paramount+ in 2022—will end with its forthcoming 20th season, set to premiere in 2027. "It’s hard to put into words what Criminal Minds has meant to all of us who have been fortunate enough to be part of this extraordinary journey,” showrunner Erica Messer told The Hollywood Reporter in an Oct. 30 statement. "While suddenly navigating the end of this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for our remarkable cast, writers, directors and crew who have poured their hearts into this show." She added, "We’re looking forward to sharing season 20 with everyone, and celebrating the legacy of this special show we’ve all built together.” Criminal Minds debuted in 2005, with Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, A. J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness and Lola Glaudini on the case as a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit.Over the years, the cast saw many departures and additions. While much of the OG lineup said wheels up, Cook, Vangsness, Paget Brewster, Joe Mantegna, Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez most notably stayed on when Criminal Minds adopted its Evolution subtitle. The police drama also saw several spinoffs during its decades-long run, including the one-season Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and two-season Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.Michael Becker/Paramount+Season 19 ended earlier this year with the exit of Zach Gilford, whose villain-turned-hero Elias Voit was sent to a maximum security prison after taking the fall for crimes committed by his daughter's kidnapper. "It was hard to say goodbye," he told Us Weekly in a July interview. "You wrap a show and a lot of times you’re like, 'I don’t know if I’m coming back next year and if we’re going to have another season in general.' On this, I did know that it was the end."
